Frequently Asked Questions
Does Lansinoh guarantee its products?
Some products have a warranty, but many are personal care items and cannot be returned once opened.
If the product is defective, Lansinoh will replace the defective portion or repair the item. If you are dissatisfied, we will work with you to solve the problem, but we do not offer refunds. Please note that every woman has different pumping and breastfeeding experiences, so we cannot guarantee success or the amount of breastmilk you will produce by using any of our products.
What is BPA and BPS and why should I choose breastfeeding products which do not contain these?
BPA or bisphenol-A is a chemical used primarily in the production of polycarbonate plastics and acts as an estrogen imposter, being widely known as a hormone disrupter. Studies have linked BPA to cancer, depression, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and a number of other ailments. BPA can be especially dangerous in pregnancy, infancy and childhood – so much so that many governments around the world have banned BPA in the production of baby bottles and other products.
BPS or bisphenol S is an alternative to BPA used by some manufacturers as a plasticiser to replace BPA. BPS is also a hormone disrupter and is considered to be equally unsafe, however this is currently allowed for the production of baby bottles and similar products.
Because safety is a top priority for Lansinoh we have taken proactive measures to ensure the Lansinoh® Manual Breast Pump is both BPA and BPS FREE.
Which settings can I customise when using the Lansinoh® 2in1 Electric Breast Pump?
The Lansinoh® 2in1 Electric Breast Pump was designed to mimic the baby’s natural feeding pattern and comes with two phases: ‘let-down’ which stimulates the milk flow through quick and short suction and ‘expression’ which maximises milk flow through longer, deeper suction. The ‘phase’ toggle button enables you to make an easy transition between the two phases. In ‘expression’ phase, you also have a choice between 3 different pumping styles which you can further tailor for comfort by selecting one of eight different suction strength levels.
Can I return to the let-down/stimulation phase once I am in the expression phase?
Yes, you can easily switch between the 2 phases using the ‘phase’ toggle button. When switched on, the 2in1 Electric Breast Pump will start in ‘let-down’ phase which lasts for 2 minutes, at which point it will automatically switch to the ‘expression’ phase. If you achieve let-down prior to the 2 minute automatic switchover, you can push the ‘phase’ toggle button and you will go into the expression phase. Similarly, if you wish to return to the faster ‘let-down’ phase during your pumping session, you can push the ‘phase’ toggle button and the pump will switch back into the ‘let-down’ phase.
What cycle and suction settings will the pump go to once the let-down phase has ended?
The ‘let-down’ phase lasts for two minutes, unless mum decides to switch to ‘expression’ phase prior to this by using the ‘phase’ toggle button. Once the pump has switched to the second phase – ‘expression’, the pump will be at the following settings: Pumping Style – 2 leaves; and suction setting – level 3. Mum can then select her preferred pumping style and increase or decrease the suction level.
Is there an ideal setting for maximum milk flow using the Lansinoh® 2in1 Electric Breast Pump?
Because every woman is different and mums respond differently to breast pumps, there is no ideal setting. However, we have designed the 2in1 Electric Breast Pump to mimic baby’s natural feeding pattern and have included optimum pumping settings to ensure your comfort and maximise milk production. We encourage mums to try the 3 pumping styles in order to find the best suited for them and use the + and – buttons to find the most comfortable setting.
What do the 1 leaf, 2 leaves, 3 leaves on the Style setting mean?
There are three different pumping styles mums can choose from to maximise their comfort and efficiency in extracting milk. These different styles are denoted by one, two and three leaves on the circular mode button. Every mum is different, so we recommend that you try each of the pumping style modes to determine which one works best and is most comfortable for you.
Are the Lansinoh® 2in1 Breast Pump parts dishwasher safe? Can I use a microwave steam bag to clean?
Please Note: Tubing and tubing Y connector or white pump connector should never be washed or sterilised.
All parts, excluding the tubing, y connector, and pump connector are dishwasher safe though we highly recommend gently hand washing the white valves and diaphragms as they are delicate and can affect the performance of the pump if damaged or torn with vigorous washing or harsh detergents. All parts except for the tubing, tubing Y connector, white pump connector and breast cushions can be steam-sterilized in a microwave bag according to the manufactures directions for use.
Please ensure all pump parts are completely dry prior to use as performance may be affected.
Can I use other pump brand replacement parts with the Lansinoh® 2in1 Double Electric Breast Pump?
The components of the Lansinoh® 2in1 Double Electric Breast Pump have been specifically developed for our pump to achieve the highest levels of quality and effectiveness. We do not recommend using another pump’s replacement parts as this might impact performance. Also, using another pump’s parts with our pump would void your warranty.
Does the 2in1 Electric Breast Pump work with batteries?
Yes, you can use 6 AA batteries (not included in the pack) to power the pump, or the AC Adapter (included in the pack). We recommend using alkaline batteries only and do not recommend using rechargeable batteries. Please replace all batteries at the same time, do not mix old and new batteries. If batteries are in the pump, but your AC adaptor is in use, the pump will use the AC adaptor to power the pump.
Can I pump directly into the Lansinoh® Breastmilk Storage Bags?
Unfortunately you will not be able to pump directly into the Lansinoh® Breastmilk Storage Bags because they have a double zipper closure and therefore will not fit securely on the pump.
How does the Lansinoh® 2in1 Electric Breast Pump compare to other available on the market?
The 2in1 Electric Breast Pump is designed as a closed system, preventing breast milk from backing up in the tubing or motor. This makes it more hygienic and safer for baby as it prevents airborne contaminants, bacteria and mold growth which can result from moisture in the tubing or pump base. Furthermore, the pump is the only one with three customisable pumping styles, offering mums optimised options for maximising her milk production and comfort.
Is the Lansinoh® 2in1 Electric Breast Pump a closed system?
Yes, all our electric pumps are a closed, hygienic system. By using a specially-designed diaphragm and diaphragm cap, the pump is guaranteed to prevent milk from backing up into the tubing and into the motor unit. This is important from a hygienic perspective (condensation and/or milk in tubing can cause mould and bacteria growth and build-up) and from a perspective of understanding how important every drop of your milk is to you and your breastfed baby.
What if I accidentally wash the tubing — can it still be used?
Our closed system means that the tubing does not need to be washed because the expressed milk does not come into contact with the tubing. If you accidentally wash the tubing, you can disconnect the tubing from the diaphragm cap and run the pump for a few minutes to see if the air from the base eliminates any condensation that may be inside. If you notice any remaining condensation or anything that may be mould, you will need to discard the tubing and contact our customer service team to purchase a new tubing.
What is the warranty for the Lansinoh® 2in1 Electric Breast Pump?
The warranty for the Lansinoh® 2in1 Electric Breast Pump is one year from the date of the original purchase or receipt. If you encounter any issues during this period, please contact our customer service team who will be able to help with any troubleshooting and provide spare parts.
How can I switch between the let-down and the expression phases?
You can easily switch between the 2 phases using the ‘phase’ toggle button. The breast pump will automatically start in the ‘let-down’ phase when you switch it on and move onto the ‘expression’ phase after 2 minutes. If you wish to go back to the ‘let-down’ phase at any point during the pumping session or if you wish to move onto the ‘expression’ phase before the 2 minutes are up, you just need to push the ‘phase’ toggle button.
If you notice any remaining condensation or anything that may be mould, you will need to discard the tubing and contact our customer service team to get new tubing.
How do I know when to stop expressing?
When you are nearing the end of a pumping session, the streams of your milk will begin to slow or stop and/or your breasts will feel softer and less full. A breast is never truly “empty,” but it will be apparent with these clues that your body has released as much milk as it will at that particular session and you can stop expressing.
How does Lansinoh® HPA® Lanolin work?
Breastfeeding is a learnt skill. If you experience nipple soreness beyond a slight tenderness when your baby latches on you may need to make some adjustments so you can be comfortable and enjoy breastfeeding your baby. Uncomfortable attachment of the baby at the breast when feeding is often the cause of sore nipples – a temporary but painful condition.
Things will improve as you establish positioning and latch-on technique but in the meantime Lansinoh HPA®Lanolin can provide soothing relief to enable you to breastfeed comfortably. The application of Lansinoh HPA®Lanolin provides the perfect moist wound healing environment. Moist wound healing involves retaining the moisture already present in areolar skin, by applying a moisture barrier cream to the injured site. Internal moisture, retained within the skin, will return the skin to its normal healthy state, supple and soft rather than brittle and dry. When cracked tissue is rehydrated in this way from within, it will heal without the formation of a scab or crust.
What type of plastic are your bags made of?
Made from food-safe polyethylene, they are tough, flexible so they won’t leak and no toxins will reach the breastmilk. After use our bags can also be recycled, so you can use them knowing that you are helping create a better future world for your baby. Most councils will recycle plastic type 4 (LDPE).
Are your bags reusable?
Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bags are designed for one-time use only.
How do I thaw my milk if frozen in your bags?
When thawing your milk it is important to handle it as gently as possible to preserve all the valuable nutrients. If the bags have been stored flat they will take less time to thaw. Breastmilk frozen in our bags can be thawed in the refrigerator or at room temperature. You may also place the sealed bag in a bowl of warm tap water but never use extremely hot or boiling water.
Can I microwave my milk while it is in your bags?
No, microwaving is never recommended for breastmilk as it destroys valuable nutrients and vitamins in the breastmilk. Additionally, it can create dangerous “hot spots” that could burn your baby when feeding.
Why are your pads so absorbent? What is polymer?
The effectiveness of the Lansinoh pad lies in the construction of the product and the materials used in the production process. Through a unique process using heat and air, paper pulp is converted to “fluffy pulp”, which is then combined with a super absorbent polymer in the form of a powder. This mixture is sandwiched between layers of paper tissue. A non-woven fabric is then placed over the tissue to provide a stay-dry lining. This lining draws breastmilk and moisture away from the skin and into the core of the pad where it is absorbed by the super absorbent polymer, which turns into a gel. The layers of tissue surrounding the polymer further insure that the moisture is locked within the core of the paper pulp and polymer. This unique action keeps both the mother’s skin and her clothing dry.
Why do you individually wrap each nursing pad? Isn’t that bad for the environment?
We individually wrap each pad because it keeps each pad clean and hygienic and allows you to toss them in your bag without worry that they will not be sanitary when you use it.
Why are the disposable nursing pads so big?
The unique shape is to allow for full coverage for maximum discretion under clothing. Also, the wider area allows for more absorption as the Super Absorbent Polymer is spread over the entire surface of the pad.
Do they come in different sizes or colours?
No, they do not. Would you be interested in pads that do? We consider feedback from our customers the most valuable information that we can ever receive and I would be glad to pass along your suggestions to our product development team.
Can I sleep with the pads in?
Yes, many mothers find our pads very absorbent, especially at night. We recommend changing the pads during the night if they become saturated.

Therapearl® 3-in 1 Breast Therapy is the only product that has three uses in one. It can be used as cold therapy to treat/relieve engorgement, hot therapy to help relieve mastitis, and plugged ducts, as well as hot/warm as a breast pump aid to reduce time spent pumping.
What is engorgement and how can Therapearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy help?
In the early stages of breastfeeding, it is not uncommon to experience swelling when your milk first comes in, this is called engorgement. Therapearl® 3-in 1 Breast Therapy can be used as a cold therapy to help treat engorgement.
What is mastitis and how can Therapearl® 3-in 1 Breast Therapy help?
Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast that can be caused by obstruction, infection and/or allergy. Mastitis is most common in the first 2-3 weeks of breastfeeding post-birth, but can occur at any stage of breastfeeding or lactation. Mastitis may come on abruptly, and usually affects only one breast.
Common recommendations for mastitis treatment are heat (with a warm/hot compress), massage, rest, and emptying the breast (by breastfeeding or pumping) and it sometimes requires antibiotics if symptoms are not improving in 12-24 hours, or if mum is acutely ill.
Therapearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy packs can be used warm/hot directly on the breast before and after nursing as a compress and in between feedings or pumping sessions for pain relief and inflammation. For more information on Mastitis; the symptoms and what can help – please visit our page on the topic – mastitis
What is a plugged duct and how can Therapearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy help?
A plugged (or blocked) duct is an area of the breast where milk flow is obstructed. The nipple pore may be blocked (often called a milk blister) or the obstruction may be further back in the milk ducts. A plugged duct usually comes on gradually and affects only one breast.
Mum will usually notice a hard lump or wedge-shaped area of engorgement in the vicinity of the plug that may feel tender, hot, swollen or look reddened. Occasionally mum will only notice localized tenderness or pain, without an obvious lump or area of engorgement. The location of the plug may shift.
A plugged duct will typically feel more painful before a feeding and less tender afterward, and the plugged area will usually feel less lumpy or smaller after nursing. Nursing on the affected side may be painful, particularly at letdown.
There are usually no systemic symptoms for a plugged duct, but a low fever (less than 101.3°F / 38.5°C) may be present.
A plugged duct can also cause:
- Milk supply and pumping output from the affected breast may decrease temporarily. This is normal and extra nursing/pumping generally get things back to normal within a short time.
- Occasionally a mum may express “strings” or grains of thickened milk or fatty-looking milk.
- After a plugged duct or mastitis has resolved, it is common for the area to remain reddened or have a bruised feeling for a week or so afterwards.
- A plugged duct can be caused by:
- Engorgement or inadequate milk removal (due to latching problems, ineffective suck, tongue-tie or other anatomical variations, nipple pain, sleepy or distracted baby, oversupply, hurried feedings, limiting baby’s time at the breast, nipple shield use, twins or higher order multiples, blocked nipple pore, etc.)
- Infrequent/skipped feedings (due to nipple pain, teething, pacifier overuse, busy mum, return to work, baby suddenly sleeping longer, scheduling, supplementing, abrupt weaning, etc.).
- Pressure on the duct (from fingers, tight bra or clothing, prone sleeping, diaper bag, etc.).
- Inflammation (from injury, bacterial/yeast infection, or allergy).
- Stress anemia, weakened immunity
Common recommendations for plugged duct treatment are heat (with a warm/hot compress), massage, rest, and emptying the breast (by breastfeeding or pumping) and it sometimes requires antibiotics if symptoms are not improving in 12-24 hours, or if mum is acutely ill.Therapearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy packs can be used warm/hot directly on the breast before and after nursing as a compress and in between feedings or pumping sessions for pain relief and inflammation.
Why does the warmth of the Therapearl® 3-in 1 Breast Therapy help milk flow?
Studies show that a warm breast triggers let-down and the release of breastmilk than a cold breast. By heating Therapearl® and wrapping it around the breast pump cushion, the heat will encourage milk let-down and stimulate milk flow milk.

Can I take my Therapearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy straight from the freezer and heat in the microwave?
Therapearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy can go straight from the freezer and be heated in the microwave, however, be very careful not to overheat your pack. Test the pack temperature prior to application, as overheating may cause injury or may damage /destroy your Therapearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy.
What happens if I heat my Therapearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy for too long?
Overheating or prolonged application may cause injury, including burns. Heating beyond the suggested time (15 seconds) may also damage or destroy your Therapearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy. It is normal for the Therapearl® to expand a little when heated for the recommended time. If you accidentally heat your Therapearl® beyond the recommended time and see it inflating like a balloon, immediately turn off your microwave, wait for the pack to cool down, and then carefully dispose of your pack. When in doubt or if your pack shows any signs of deforming, dispose of your pack – a pack that has been overheated should never be reused. Therapearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy will explode if heated for an excessive amount of time.
What should I do if my microwave doesn’t seem to be heating my pack evenly?
Even microwaves with the same power often heat differently, and sometimes unevenly. We always recommend that you test your pack temperature before you remove it from the microwave, and if it seems to be unevenly heated, shake it around for a while to let the pearls mix together.
Can I fall asleep with my pack on?
TheraPearl® packs were designed to be therapeutically effective and safe but we do not recommend you fall asleep with a heated or chilled pack applied.
Is it okay to use a Therapearl® pack on open wounds?
No. Therapearl® packs were not designed to be used on open wounds.
Do I have to freeze my Therapearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy for 2 hours prior to using for cold therapy?
You can leave your pack in the freezer indefinitely, or just chill it for a short period of time. Some of our customers are looking for “cool” rather than very cold so they store their packs in the refrigerator.

Are there any medical conditions that may put me at risk if I use TheraPearl®?
Therapearl® was designed by a doctor to be safe and therapeutically effective, but there are some conditions which may increase the risk of frostbite. Check with your doctor if you think one of these may apply to you. People who are taking beta blockers, which decrease the flow of blood to the skin, are particularly susceptible. Also at risk are smokers, individuals with diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, local limb ischemia, arteriosclerosis, cold urticaria, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, or Raynaud’s phenomenon. A low body fat percentage, most commonly found in athletes and the elderly, also increases the risk of frostbite. Additionally, people suffering from exhaustion, dehydration or malnutrition or who have consumed alcohol should also be careful when using Therapearl® 3-in-1 packs.
What does the “CE” mark on a Therapearl® pack stand for?
The CE mark on our product demonstrates that a TheraPearl® pack complies with European Economic Area (EEA) requirements for our type of medical device. These requirements cover such areas as risk management, quality control and safety.
